NEW NMC Criteria For Publications
The Draft Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2024 (TEQ-2024) was issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in January 2025. This draft regulation aims to standardize the qualifications and experience required for faculty appointments and promotions in medical institutions across India. Stakeholders and the general public are invited to submit their objections or suggestions within 7 days of the draft’s publication in the Official Gazette of India.
Requirements of Publications for Faculty Appointments and Promotions
1. General Guidelines for Publications
- Publications are required for promotions to higher faculty designations (e.g., Associate Professor and Professor).
- Only specific types of publications are considered eligible:
- Original papers
- Meta-analyses
- Systematic reviews
- Case series
- Publications must be indexed in recognized journals such as:
- Medline
- PubMed Central
- Science Citation Index
- Science Citation Index Expanded
- Embase
- Scopus
- Directory of Open Access Journals (DoAJ)
2. Publication Requirements for Different Posts
a. Assistant Professor to Associate Professor
- Number of Publications: At least two publications after being appointed as Assistant Professor.
- Authorship: The faculty member must be among the first three authors of the publication.
- Publications must meet the indexing and content criteria specified above.
b. Associate Professor to Professor
- Number of Publications: At least two additional publications after being appointed as Associate Professor.
- Authorship: The faculty member must again be among the first three authors.
- Publications must adhere to the same standards as for Assistant Professors.
3. Transition Period Criteria for Publications
- Faculty appointed during the transition period must meet the following publication requirements:
- Two publications in the new specialty during the transition period.
- The publications should comply with the NMC norms and be indexed in recognized databases.
4. Special Notes on Publications
- Research publications submitted for promotion must reflect substantial contributions to the field.
- Review articles or non-indexed publications will not be considered for meeting these requirements.
