Can a doctor be posted as Senior Resident after 45 years of age? NMC says NO.
Doctor of Medicine and 45 years of age? National Medical Council (NMC) thinks You are Good For Nothing.
Think it like this. You Did Post Graduate Degree from a prestigious Medical College and had been in private practice since then. Since you come from a middle class family you had a lot of responsibilities for which you did flog yourself till now and now you have become financially stable. Now you think that you should contribute to dissemination of knowledge and teach medical students. After all you are having such a rich experience of working. Moreover you hold that Prestigious MD (Doctor Of Medicine) Degree from a reputed government medical college.
You thought you must be in demand since there is a lot of crunch of medical teachers everywhere and you will get a red carpet welcome in any of the medical college.
Did you think that?
Wait …
The reality is that if you have just completed 45 years of your life and didn’t do post MD sernior Residency for 1 years you are good for nothing.
According to Medical Council of India the Minimum requirement for appointment of assistant professor in any of the Indian medical colleges is as following
A post graduate qualification MD/MS in the concerned subject and as per the TEQ Regulations and experience of working for one year as Senior Resident in the concerned subject in a recognized medical college.
Now you will think its not a big issue and ill work as senior resident for 1 year and after that will join as assistant professor.
But there is a catch …
According to rules
Senior Resident is one who is doing his/her residency in the concerned post graduate subject after obtaining PG degree (MD/MS) and is below 45 years of age (Previously this age limit was 40 years but was subsequently raised to 45 years).
And now since you just crossed 45 years you are not eligible for the post of Senior Resident and when you are not eligible for the post of Senior Resident then naturally you can not ever become Assiatnt professor since 1 year experience of working as senior resident is an obligatory requirement for appointment in any of the medical colleges as assistant professor.
So post 45 years your MD degree and your experience and desire to teach medical students will have no value unless you have already done senior residency for 1 year after obtaining MD Degree.
We can only wish that somebody will bring it to the attention of National Medical Council the arbitrariness of this age limit for the appointment of senior resident’s post in various medical colleges.
Doing away with this age limit will be beneficial not only for those specialists who have crossed 45 years of age but also for students and our country at large.
Hope The Doctors in NMC realise that for most of the doctors life starts after 40.
