How to Choose Medical College for Post Graduate Medical Courses (MD/MS/DNB)
Selecting a medical collegefor post graduate degree is one of the mst crucial decisions you may be making after qualifying NEET PG. One wrong decision here can effectively ruin your life.
Fist Step:- Choose the PG degree/Diploma
Choosing the post graduate degree or diploma after qualifying NEET PG is one of the most crucial steps. As soon as you pass NEET PG you must have clear answers to following questions.
1. Which Post graduate Subject you are interested in?
2. What is more important for you ? is it any specific subject ? or any list of subjects in
order of priority?
3. If you don’t get PG Degree then are you ready to take diploma in some other subject or you are willing to take PG Degree in other subject or you are ready to take diploma or DNB in same subject?
4. If you are not getting MD In subject of your choice and if you don’t want to do diploma in same subject then are you ready to once again study and appear for next NEET exam?
All these question must be asked and have a ready answer. To help you choose we have a detailed article about how to choose PG seat after MBBS?
Second Step: – Choose proper medical college.
Suppose you have a good NEET rank and you have many options before you then second question is which college will be suitable for you to do post graduation. There are certain important points you should consider.
1. First and Foremost is duration of bond service after MD/MS/DNB.
In most of the states you will have to o compulsory bond service after MD/MS/DNB. And the duration of such Bond Service varies from state to state. While some states have no bond service there are states where you will have to do bond service at least for 5 years. So choose wisely. Even if you intend to do job in medical college after MD then also you should choose states which have less bond service because bond service will keep you away from doing anything else.
2. Distance From Your Hometown.
Though not much important but the distance from your hometown should be reasonable. During post graduation you will not get frequent leaves and if you take PG hundreds of kilometers away from your home then half of your leave period will go in travelling so try to take admission near your home town. Of course it doesn’t mean you take PG seat near your hometon at the cost of college quality but what I intend tosay is if 2 medical colleges are of approximately same quality then choose the college which is nearer to your hometown.
3. PG teachers
One of the most important factors is availability of high quality of pg teacher. Working under a highly respected PG teacher can increase your clinical acumen like anything. Moreover doing research work (Thesis) under a great teacher will give you insights into how research work is done. The importance of research work can not be overemphasised in this age of evidence based medicine.
4. Last but not the least is patient exposure.
There are some medical colleges which have a very heavy load of patients and in these colleges you will come across many rare cases which you may be able to see if you to PG in remote areas where patient load is less. Its all the way more important in surgical branches where in medical colleges having a high load of patients as a surgery resident you will be able to perform many surgeries during your residency.
