A Quick Guide to NMC Guidelines for promotions in Indian Medical Colleges.

It is very Important to know about the exact rules for promotions which are going to be considered for the purpose of promotions in medical colleges in India.

The National Medical Commission for the purpose of defining NMC Criteria for promotions came up with a circular dated 22/02/2022 which describes in details the conditions for consideration for promotions in various medical colleges in India

To get a teaching post in Indian medical colleges minimum qualification is MD/MS. After completion of post graduate degree (MD/MS) one has to work as Senior Resident (SR) at least for 1 year to be eligible for the post of assistant professor.

After joining as Assistant professor it compulsory to work as assistant professor at least for 4 years to be eligible for the post of associate professor because the requirement of post of associate professor is 5 years experience after MD/MS (1 year SR + 4 year Assistant professor ). In addition to 5 years post MD/MS experience 2 publications as per NMC criteria for publications (read here NMC criteria for valid publications) are also necessary. In addition to this the candidate should also have complete Basic course in Medical Education Technology and Basic course in biomedical research.

After Joining as associate professor it is compulsory to work as associate professor at least for 3 years to be eligible for the post of professor because the requirement of post of professor is 8 years experience after MD/MS (1 year SR + 4 year Assistant professor + 3 years as Associate professor). In addition to 8 years post MD/MS experience 2 publication as per NMC criteria for publications (read here NMC criteria for valid publications) are also necessary. Out of this 4 papers the candidates already have 2 publications when they were promoted as associate professor and hence 2 new publications during working on the post of associate professor are necessary that will make a total of 4 papers. In addition to this the candidate should also have complete Basic course in Medical Education Technology and Basic course in biomedical research.
