How To Choose Post Graduate Degree (MD/MS/DNB/Diploma) After MBBS?
Which Post Graduate degree is best after MBBS?
The question has been asked a number of times in fact I feel it is the most commonly asked question by everyone who has just passed MBBS and preparing for NEET PG.
Rule No 1:
And it is the most important rule. The first and foremost criteria for Post graduate subject selection is your choice. Selecting subject of MD/MS/DNB seat is basically like marrying someone you love. Remember it is going to be with you till you die. If you love someone, he or she may not be the smartest or most beautiful person in the town but the one and only fact which overrides any other consideration is that you love him or her. That is the most important and the only criteria to marry someone. Everything else become secondary. If you are passionate about a subject you should take diploma of that subject (then you will have option of doing secondary DNB in same subject) rather than doing degree in some other subject.
The Post Graduate Subject Selection Algorithm is given Below. Go through it carefully before selecting a PG seat.
But of course, there are people who may not be passionate about a particular subject in that scenario there are some basic rules which needs to be followed.
Rule No 1: Always Go For MD/MS as 1st preference because MD/MS is the basic degree in todays world. It has following advantages.
- For Working as specialist you need to at least have MD/MS degree. PG Diploma holders are usually not given post of specialist in corporate hospitals and they are not eligible to work as teaching faculty in medical institutes.
- Its easy to pass MD as compared to DNB because in DNB the exams are usually conducted in different states and the standard of education may differ vastly. DNB has a low passing rate as compared to MD/MS.
- For appearing NEET-Superspecialty Exam you Need to have MD/MS degree or at least DNB.
- In various foreign countries such as United Arab Emirates MD/MS/DNB is the minimum requirement to work as specialist.
Rule No 2 : Take DNB if you are not getting MD/MS.
DNB is equivalent to MD/MS in all respect. The only problem with DNB is its low passing rates. We have seen many people who couldn’t pass DNB even after trying for 3-4 years and then they quit DNB and eventually did PG Diploma in same subject. But if you are ready to do hard work you can opt for DNB if you are not getting MD/MS.
Rule No 3:- If you are not getting MD/MS/DNB.
You have 2 options . Either you take diploma or re-appear for next NEET. Now this is tricky , sometimes it happens that after re-appearing you wont even be getting diploma you were getting this year so you need to carefully weigh risk reward ratio. If you are confident that you can do hard work and get MD/MS/DNB next year then its always better to wait and take MD/MS/DNB next year rather than going for diploma. But if you are not confident that you will do better next year then you can opt of diploma and then after passing Diploma you can do DNB in same subject as secondary DNB candidate (Post Diploma DNB is that of 2 years).
